How a surprise proposal photoshoot actually works

While the actual proposal may only take a moment, it’s important to allocate enough time for your photographer to capture the build-up, the big question, and your joyful reactions. Our Paris proposal packages include a 30-60 minute photo session following the proposal to create a variety of posed and candid couple shots celebrating your engagement. This allows you to savor the moment without feeling rushed.

1. You tell us the date and roughly where you’ll be. We plan around your trip, not the other way round. Most couples book few weeks ahead, though we’ve done same-week proposals when the plan changed.

2. We pick the spot and the exact time together. Not just “the Eiffel Tower” — a specific position, facing a specific direction, at a specific hour. The direction matters more than people expect: it decides whether your partner’s face is lit or in shadow at the moment they turn around.

3. We agree on how you’ll arrive. You’ll get a meeting point that sounds like a normal part of your morning — a café, a bridge, a corner. Your partner has no reason to think anything is happening.

4. Your photographer is already there, hidden, before you arrive. Usually 1 hour. We’re photographing something else entirely — a building, a street, nothing. In Paris, someone with a camera pointed at architecture is the most invisible person on the street.

5. You give the signal to the photographer, could be a hand in a pocket, a specific position, removing sunglasses…

6. You propose. We shoot continuously. From before you kneel until well after. The photographs people treasure are rarely the ring — they’re the hands, the reaction, the ten seconds afterwards when nobody knows what to do with themselves.

7. We come and introduce ourselves. This is the part clients don’t anticipate: your partner has just had the most emotional moment of their life and is now being told a photographer was hiding in the bushes. It always lands well.

8. We keep shooting as a couple session. Another 30 minutes or an hour of proper portraits, now that both of you know. This is when the celebration photos happen.

Timing: the thing that decides everything

Sunrise is not a style preference, it’s the difference between your photographs having strangers in them or not.

In June, sunrise in Paris is around 6:00am. In December it’s closer to 8:45am — which makes winter proposals far easier to arrange, and the light at that hour is the best of the year.

Sunset works too, but every famous spot in Paris is at its busiest an hour before sunset. If your partner would be uncomfortable proposing in front of two hundred people, propose in the morning.
